• What is Facial Cosmetic Acupuncture?

Facial cosmetic acupuncture is the holistic use of acupuncture to treat:

    • fine lines
    • wrinkles
    • pigmentation
    • dry skin
    • acne and other scars
    • drooping eyelids
    • dark circles and puffiness under eyes
    • uneven skin tone

  • How does Cosmetic Acupuncture work?

The insertion of tiny needles into the facial tissue increases blood and lymphatic circulation in the area which will improve the delivery of oxygen and nutrients to the skin.   When the circulation is increased, the collagen production is also increased which will give the skin more tightness and elasticity helping to fill out the fine lines, soften deeper wrinkles and lift and firm the skin. The increased circulation also rehydrates the skin by stimulating the sweat and sebaceous glands and helps exfoliation by encouraging the proliferation of new skin cells.

Placing acupuncture needles into muscles in the face also helps to take away that “stressed” look by relaxing facial muscles.

A 1996 report in the international Journal of Clinical Acupuncture reported that among 300 cases treated with Cosmetic Acupuncture*, 98% had marked effects with one course of treatment. The effects included:

    • skin becoming more delicate and fair
    • improvement of the elasticity of facial muscles
    • diminished wrinkles
    • healthier complexion
    • overall rejuvenation

  • What is involved in a treatment?

The initial consultation takes approximately one and a half hours. We take your full medical history, then your face will be assessed using Ruri Facial Diagnosis.  Like Iridology, Ruri Face Diagnosis involves reading your face to reveal problems in your body.  Faces age according to corresponding problems within the body so it is important to correctly diagnose the face before beginning treatment.

Acupuncture points are selected to suit your particular condition and extremely fine sterile, single use only needles are inserted into specific points on the face and body in order to correct the imbalances that are contributing to the signs of ageing. These help restore normal energy flow and stimulate and improve your body’s natural ability to heal itself.

The needles are left in place for approximately 20 minutes and when they are removed you are given a relaxing facial massage using 100% pure organic rose hip oil. We also give you skin care, lifestyle and dietary advice as part of your treatment.

Sometimes we will also recommend a cosmetic herbal mask as part of your treatment.  Herbs which are specifically blended to help your skin complaints are mixed with organic rosehip oil and then placed onto your skin as a relaxing and nourishing facial mask.

Follow up treatments take approximately one hour.

  • What does the Acupuncture feel like?

You may feel a small prick or pinch when the needle is first inserted.  In the face, once the needle is in place you will probably not feel anything at all.  In the body, treatment is more effective if the needles are stimulated to achieve “qi” which is felt as a dull ache or heavy sensation.  People often report feeling a pleasant warm, tingling sensation and many people relax and go to sleep during treatment.

  • What if I don’t want needles?

We also offer herbal treatment mask packages where herbs are blended specifically for your individual needs.  We will apply a mask to your skin followed by a relaxing facial massage.  You can then either continue coming to the clinic for herbal mask treatments or we can teach you how to apply masks at home and provide you with everything you will require.

  • How many treatments will I need?

For best results (depending on your age and cosmetic concerns) we recommend you attend twice weekly treatments over 6 weeks reducing to weekly treatments for a further 3 weeks – a total of 15 treatments over 9 weeks.

This allows the treatment to take advantage of your body’s natural skin rejuvenation cycle (approximately 28 days). The lines on your face soften as you grow new tissue and your skin cells are renewed.

We also offer one-off AcuFacial Treatments to enhance your skin’s appearance for special events or if you are unable to commit to a full course of treatment.

Once the initial course is completed, maintenance sessions are recommended to maintain the improvements. These can vary in frequency depending on your age, skin type and your general health. They usually involve only one session anywhere from monthly to once every 2 – 5 years. This will be discussed in detail with you once your assessment takes place.

  • How soon can I expect to see results?

With each treatment you should start to notice that your face looks fresher, your skin tone is tighter, your pores are minimized and your eyes sparkle.  Softening of lines generally begins after about 5 weeks of treatment as this is how long it takes for skin cells to turn over and for new collagen to be produced.

  • Are there any risks or side effects?

The main side effect is looking and feeling great! There is a small risk (3%) of slight bruising that will fade as a normal bruise would fade. Other potential side effects of any acupuncture treatment can include feeling drowsy, minor pain on needle insertion and fainting. These side effects generally occur in very small numbers (often less than 1% of patients experience these effects).
